What Is a Google Business Profile?

Google Business Profile 3 min read Updated 24 Jul 2026

In Short

A Google Business Profile is the business information people see in Google Search and Maps. It is free, it does not replace your website, and your business should remain its Primary Owner.

00. What the Profile Does

A Google Business Profile can show:

  • Your business name
  • Address or service area
  • Hours
  • Phone number
  • Website
  • Photos
  • Services or products
  • Customer reviews

It helps customers confirm that they found the right business and decide how to contact or visit it.

The profile is not your website. Google controls the platform and its rules. Your website remains the place where you control the design, content, and customer journey.

01. Who Is Eligible

Google Business Profile is for businesses that meet customers in person during their stated hours.

This can include:

  • A storefront where customers visit
  • A service business that travels to customers
  • A hybrid business that receives customers and also travels to them

An online-only business without in-person customer contact is generally not eligible.

P.O. boxes and remote mailboxes cannot be used as business locations. Virtual offices are not eligible. A coworking office can qualify only when the business has clear signage, receives customers there, and has its own staff present during the stated hours.

02. Storefront, Service Area, or Hybrid

Choose the type that matches how the business actually works.

Storefront

Customers visit a staffed business location during the hours shown. The address can appear publicly.

Service-area business

The business travels to customers and does not receive them at its base. A plumber or mobile cleaner can be an example. Google may require the real base address for verification, but the address should be hidden from the public.

Hybrid business

Customers can visit a staffed location, and the business also travels to customers. The address can appear only when customers are genuinely received there.

Do not show a home address just to rank in a city. Show it only when customers are served there and Google's location rules are met.

03. Why Ownership Matters

Create the profile with a Google Account controlled by the business. The business owner should remain Primary Owner.

A designer or marketing professional normally needs Manager access. Managers can edit information, add photos, publish updates, see performance information, and respond to reviews. They cannot add or remove users or remove the profile.

Everyone should use their own Google Account. There is no need to share a password.

Google's policy for third parties says clients must retain ownership or co-ownership. When a working relationship ends, a third party must return exclusive control within seven business days.

04. What the Profile Does Not Guarantee

Creating a profile does not guarantee:

  • A particular ranking
  • A particular verification method
  • That every edit will be accepted immediately
  • That negative reviews will be removed
  • That the profile cannot be suspended

Google can update business information using reports and other data. Review the profile regularly and correct inaccurate changes.

05. Safe Review Practices

You may ask real customers for reviews and share Google's review link or QR code.

Do not:

  • Buy reviews
  • Offer a discount, gift, or payment for a review
  • Ask only customers who are likely to leave positive reviews
  • Pressure customers to use specific wording

Replies are public. Thank the reviewer, protect their privacy, and take complicated customer-service matters into a private conversation.

06. Completion Check

Before setting up a profile, confirm:

  1. Your business meets customers in person.
  2. You know whether it is a storefront, service-area, or hybrid business.
  3. You have a Google Account controlled by the business.
  4. The business will remain Primary Owner.
  5. Your public name, address or service area, hours, and phone number match the real business.

When those points are clear, continue with Set Up Your Google Business Profile.
